grocery challenge header All You Grocery Challenge Reminder + Giveaway

Tomorrow is the last day to register for the All You Grocery Challenge.  This is a great way for all you newbies to really challenge yourselves to save some money!  Can you make it on $25 a week per family member for your groceries?

I’ve got a little competition going on with some of the other Mom bloggers out there, and I say my readers will do better than theirs! All you have to do is go through my  link HERE, and it will keep track of how my readers do!  You guys ready to be the ultimate coupon savers?  Here are the details…

What you need to do:

  • During the contest, groceries that you purchase count toward your weekly total. However, feel free to grow, barter or use stockpiled food to supplement your meals. Creativity and ingenuity count!
  • If you eat at a restaurant or buy takeout, the cost must go toward the week’s total.
  • Household supplies and toiletries do not count toward each weeks total.
  • Keep track of your money using the optional Spending Log.
  • Save receipts–you will be required to submit them if you are a finalist.

My tips for you:

  • Make sure your stockpile is well stocked before the competition begins.
  • Plan your shopping trips well – no impulses for one month!
  • Plan meals creatively around what you have.  Most of us have pantries full of things, but yet we continue to go shopping.  Plan your meals so that you utilize what you have very well.
  • Take advantage of bartering and gardening.  Trade friends and family for things you need out of what you have in your stockpile.

Dates of the competition: July 13 – August 17.  YOU MUST REGISTER BY JULY 12!!

So go ahead and register HERE and look around.  They have a great spending log to use, so that you can easily keep track of everything.  And remember to keep all of your receipts!

I plan my meals around the sales and of course combine sales with coupons. We also stock up when there is a really good sale!

My biggest tip would be to plan your meals around what you have at home, THEN check the ads and sales and buy for your stock pile and the extras needed to finish your meals. I have gotten our family of 4 down to $33 a month average doing this and I feel like we are as stocked in our stock pile as ever!

My best tip is to not go overboard when you see a good sale. It’s easy to do this (and I certainly do). But if you overspend on “deals” they’re not really deals anymore. :)

Stretching meat is one of my biggest moneysavers, since it is one of those items that don’t often have coupons. We put lentils in the shepherds’ pie, beans in the taco meat, beans in the chicken pot pie, and oatmeal and breadcrumbs in the meatloaf. Serving meat “on it’s own” is a rare occurrence in my house. Nobody feels deprived, though, since we get all the flavor but far lower grocery bills (beans/lentils run about $1.29/lb in my stores- and that’s dried, which yields between 6-8 cups per lb after rehydrating).

The Bogo’s combined with coupons is the way that I save the most consistently. I have also learned to incorporate things that I can get for free or pennies into our meals even if it was something we never had before.

Amy Scott July 11, 2009 at 7:30 pm

My grocery tip is to always shop with a plan. When you shop spontaneously and without your coupons in order, you will spend much more than you intend or need to.

I save on groceries by stockpiling what I can. I combine BOGOs with coupons. I also buy at warehouse stores for meats.

My best tip is planning meals around what is on sale and looking for manager’s specials.

robin July 11, 2009 at 8:23 pm

My best tips are to plan ahead and stick to the plan when going to the store, and don’t just buy something because it’s cheap, look at your actual out of pocket. It’s easy to wind up with cheap stuff you won’t use or need.

Karen July 11, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I have signed up for the challenge and plan to eat out of our stockpile and garden.

Michelle July 11, 2009 at 10:59 pm

My best tip is to always plan your shopping trip. Don’t go to the store without a list! The only time we’re allowed to go off the list is for fruits and veggies. I’d rather spend more money on those.

Also, I was thinking about this challenge, whats to stop someone from grocery shopping and not submitting a receipt? Other than their own morals and honesty of course.

My best tip is to plan several low meat or no meat meals through the week and to use internet recipe sites to find recipes using ingredients you already have on hand.

Karen July 12, 2009 at 11:19 am

I plan my menu for the week using what I have & I also shop discount stores we have here in Pa. I can find great organic deals for 50-75% off reg. prices!

Karen July 12, 2009 at 11:20 am

I subscribe too! Love your tips!

Molly July 12, 2009 at 2:17 pm

I pretty much only buy things that are already on sale AND I have a coupon for. I also like to bring my coupons organized into sections in my notebook, that way I can easily access them at the store when I see a great deal that was not advertised!

Ali Holt July 12, 2009 at 2:57 pm

My best tip is to always look for coupons– there is a good chance you can find one online, if its not in the paper! then of course, use them! Also, I do my basics at Wal-mart ( cereal, granola bars, etc.) I seem to save a lot of money by doing that!

My biggest tip is to plan meals around the weekly sale meat, and freeze a great deal for later use. I also try to make a vegetarian meal once a week. Thanks!

Heather July 12, 2009 at 4:11 pm

Plan your menus and stick to the plan. Buy meat when it’s onsale and freeze it so each week the bulk of your shopping is fresh dairy and produce.

My best tip is always be on the lookout for the clearance items to use your coupons with. This often times will allow for FREE items.
