Unfortunately stuff like that can happen even with dogs people don't get from a shelter. I've known that to happen with dogs people have raised from puppies. He was 2 years old, and seemed as sweet as could be. Three weeks later, on my twins' 8th birthday, shortly before we were supposed to go to the church for their baptism service, I was watching as my daughter was petting the dog. He, unprovoked, suddenly barked loudly and bit her in the face. We spent the evening at the hospital getting her face stitched up, and she will bear the physical scar forever. The experience was emotionally traumatic for the entire family (I have 4 kids). No one ever mentioned the risks of shelter adoptions to us.
