herb gardening How to start an indoor herb garden

Many people are intimidated by the thought of having a garden. Either you don’t have the room for it, or you just simply know that your thumb is nowhere near any shade similar to the color green. That’s cool, my thumb was as brown as they come just a few years ago. But these days I have several garden beds as well as a ton of herbs inside and out.

So what does it take to start having an in-door herb garden? Sunshine (you’re gonna need a nice window with some sun coming in), water and a little bit of plant love!

Recently I went on an herb walk at the Natural Products Expo. I got to listen to two amazing herbalists, and definitely got the herb fever. I had been growing plants prior to this, but now I was motivated to have herbs everywhere! You might say that I went a little crazy with my herbs. But I’m loving every moment of the herb gardening. So are my meals!

1. Find some herbs that you would like to grow. This may include you taking a trip to your local Nursery, or doing some research online. Some of my favorite, easy herbs are the following:

  • Pineapple sage – oh my, it smells amazing!
  • Basil – so easy!
  • Thyme – ’cause we all got time for some a dat!
  • Rosemary – can turn into a lovely bush if you plant it in a nice sunny spot!
  • Fennel – I’m a huge fan of that licorice taste – especially in my juices!
  • Oregano – perfect to have on hand!

2. Get some good organic soil and pots. If you don’t have a compost pile, get some organic plant food as well.

3. Time to get dirty and planty. Put your plants in the pots with some good soil, plant food, and water. Water them every day for the next few days while they get acclimated to their new environment.

4. Water every other day or less depending on the plant. Some plants need a lot of water while others need less. When you purchase your plants from a nursery, they will come with instructions on what the plant likes, so be sure to pay attention to this.

Do you like to grow herbs? What are some of your favorites? I’m wanting to add some more fabulous herbs to my indoor and outdoor herb gardens and would love to know what some of your favs are!!

earthy mom gift ideas What every Earthy Mom wants for Mothers Day

So you have an “Earthy Mom” on your list this Mother’s Day. What does she really want you to get her? Well watch my video below, and I’ll share the scoop!

If you are reading this post in a reader and can’t see the video, click through here to watch.

1. Get her some herbs – cause every Mom that loves to play in the dirt will love some new herbs. Make sure they’re organic, too, and she’ll really be happy! They are inexpensive and something she’ll really appreciate!

2. Make her a fresh garden plot and help her plant some goodness in it! All you need is some fresh dirt and some cool plants to go in it.

3. Chickens! If it’s legal in your area and you know she’s been wanting this for a while, then go for it! My Father made me the chicken tractor in the video, and I picked up some chickens from a local farmer. The kids and I love feeding the chickens and hunting for the eggs every day!

4. Get her a nice blender! If she’s a Earthy health-nut, then chances are she wants a nice blender like a BlendTec or a Vitamix so that she can whip up some goodies in the kitchen! This is the pricier gift idea, but if it’s in the budget then go for it!

5. Some nice potted or hanging plants! If you have a small budget this Mother’s Day, then bless her with some beautimous plants! If she’s Earthy, then she’ll be happy, and your wallet will be as well!

Happy Mother’s Day to all my fellow “Earthy Moms” out there! What’s on your wishlist this Mother’s Day?
