Have you ever come home and found evidence of what the kids made in the microwave? Well, today my kids decided to make hot chocolate but it turned out to be a chocolate volcano! If you don’t already know, it is NOT a good idea to add the cocoa powder mix to the water prior to heating. If you do, you can see what you might get.
Surprisingly, the rest of the microwave wasn’t too bad although it’s seen some pretty ugly days!
Here’s my easy, scrub method for removing all sorts of baked-on, splattered, goopy mess.

All you need is a sponge (preferably with a non-scratch side), water and gloves. No cleaners required! Soak the sponge thoroughly in water- if it’s not wet enough, you run the risk of catching fire!
If you’ve really got a lot of cooked-on food, you might want to put in a small bowl of water, as well. Place it in the microwave and heat for 1 minute. This will create a nice steam bath in the oven and loosen all that baked-on mess.

Now, I do have to admit that I rinsed off the glass plate a bit before doing this, but I didn’t scrub at all or use dish soap.
Wearing gloves to protect your skin from the heat, carefully take the hot sponge and wipe the inside surfaces. You may need to rinse several times depending on how dirty the sponge gets. And you may find it necessary to still wash the glass plate in the sink or dishwasher, but the interior of the microwave should come clean very easily.
When you’re done, wipe the inside with a clean cloth to dry and give it a nice shine. This technique can be repeated as needed; just make sure you re-wet your sponge!
Voila! My microwave was sparkling in less than 5 minutes… and I didn’t use any harsh chemicals or cleaners where I prepare my family’s meals. But if you need a little extra scrubbing power, you could a little vinegar to the mix.
Have you tried this method before?
