I was so ecstatic to meet so many amazing people recently at Natural Products Expo. Brands, people, fellow press, innovative leaders, you name it….they were there and it was an honor to be a part of it.
But the unhealthy truth about this community (and really this can be true of any company/brand) is that there are a lot of people working for big brands that are doing it to just have a job. I found this out late one evening when talking with a few people from various companies and brands.
Granted, there are many people I know that have jobs that they don’t love, but for some reason I automatically thought that people working for an organic/health-related company would be passionate about healthy living and sustainability.
For the most part, I think that people who work for brands and companies like this are passionate, but there are those that are not. This is not good for the brands, because companies should have people that are passionate and want to be a part of something that can hopefully help change the world.
The most disturbing moment of the weekend for me was when a girl came up to me to offer me a beef jerky sample. When I asked if it was organic she said, “Hmm…I don’t really know, what does organic mean?” I felt sorry for the girl, because trying to market a brand at an organic and natural expo was clearly out of her element.
Do what you love, and bring along people with you that have that same passion. Brands that can do this will have employees that work harder, spread the word faster, and are always passionate about the company that they work for.
1/4 of the cars in the parking lot that people own and drive to their job at Nissan are Nissan cars. They don’t breathe it. They just work there.
Do you breathe it, or is it just talk?
