Garbage disposals can get pretty nasty doing an honest day’s work.  To control bad odors, toss some orange or lemon slices in the disposal and grind away.  The oil and juices from the citrus peels and fruit will freshen the smell for a long time.

Freeze vinegar in cubes and crush in the disposal to keep the blades sharp and safely kill bacteria.

I read on another blog about a woman who dumped a cup of bleach down her drain every week. I wanted to cry.
