candy Natural and Thrifty in 365: #79 Ditch the Candy

Candy is so yummy right? It’s filled with additives, chemicals, preservatives, and let’s not forget, lots and lots of processed sugars!  Most of today’s diseases and illnesses can be linked to processed foods and sugar itself.  And this doesn’t even touch on the topic of child slavery being used to make your Halloween candy. Does candy still sound appetizing?

Skip the candy this year, and go for something healthier and greener. If you must hand things out, consider making popcorn balls or some other homemade item. Dried fruit also makes a great alternative to candy.  And if that doesn’t float your boat, grab a 5lb bag of organic lollipops to hand out to the neighborhood or give your own kids.

What are some of your ideas for alternatives to candy?

Natural & Thrifty in 365 is a year-long series of 365 tips for living more green, natural and healthy while saving money. unfortunately I don’t think homemade goodies are a great idea. Due to there being a bunch of sickos out there most parents won’t let thier kids touch anything that isn’t wrapped. Which is probably wise! I was thinking the deal you had for fruit leather would make a great healthy treat to hand out…. or don’t bother handing anything out at all. Super thrifty! I guess I’m a halloween grinch ;)

In this day and age, I would not allow my children to eat anything that was homemade from a stranger. And lets admit it, must of us do not truly know our neighbors except to wave and say hello. But there are plenty of great ideas to pass out…stickers, pencils, bookmarks, plastic spider rings, etc. Hopefully, everyone will have a wonderful and safe Halloween.

I don’t think homemade items would be consumed. I wouldn’t want my child to eat a homemade item from a stranger. I think kids eating candy a few times a year is really not the end of the world. I have heard those lollipops are good though. Will probably pick some up next year.

i agree. im afraid most home-made goodies are thrown away. @ halloween, christmas etc. schools hardly allow home-made treats anymore (my child’s school district doesnt allow sweets at all.)

im guessing those cookies, nutbreads and homemade candies people work hard on get trashed by teachers, mail carriers….

I like your blog, but this posting is a little over the top. Homemade treats aren’t allowed in my kids’ school, which I think is rather unfortunate. I wouldn’t let my kids eat treats that weren’t wrapped on Halloween. I don’t know my neighbors that well.
I don’t think letting the kids eat a bunch of candy once a year is a big deal. We had over 100 kids come to our door tonight; organic candy for all of them would be more than a little beyond our budget.
