Diving for Food

by Crystal Collins on September 5, 2008

I’m sure many of us have heard of dumpster diving to find things like furniture and toys. But have you heard of diving for food? It’s a movement of people called Freegans, and they eat completely out of the garbage that is thrown away by stores. A lot of the things they find are organic, and perfectly edible.

How far would you go with dumpster diving? Do you think we are wasting way too much as a country? Watch this video and tell me what you think.

I DO think we are wasting too much food…I do NOT think I would dumpster dive as a choice. (Especially having kids)

I have heard of Dumpster Diving before, but Diving for Food is new to me. I think it is great that they are doing this to save some money, but this is nothing that I would do for my family. I do think that we are wasting money as a country, but I would never go as far as getting my food out of the dumpster. I am quite content with buying my food with my stacked coupons. :) BR/BR/Take care!

I would so do this. Nothing wrong with it! That food was in bags. I’ve been wanting to do this for a really long time, but I can never find anyone to go with me. I’m afraid to go by myself..I’d just feel unsafe.

I plan on trying at least one of your scenarios completely this week. I have checked twice and our store still can’t seem to find it’s arnicare gel? But hopefully it will come in on a shipment this week. BR/BR/As far as dumpster diving for food – I think I would have to draw the line there. BR/BR/Today when I dropped of my recycling at the drop off there was a large stack of newspapers – I retrieved about 7 or 8 past coupon inserts!! Yea!! My husband thinks I am crazy, but that’s about as close to any sort of dumpster/garbage digging I will do!

I’m not sure I could dumpster dive for food. DH and I met while working at a grocery store and I just don’t think it’s safe or healthy. BR/BR/I actually don’t think there was that much going in the actual dumpster from our store. The vendors mostly came back and got out of date products. Meat and bakery items were reduced for quick sale. I’m not sure about produce.

We definitely waste too much EVERY single day. Myself included. I saw this special on TV a couple months ago and it was very intriguing. I started CVSing shortly thereafter and was pretty inspired by the freegans, but I think that they are just a little over the top. I say, everything in moderation. :) Well, God says it in His word. ;) Jessica *jsings115(at)yahoo(dot)com

Is this even really allowed? Aren’t the dumpsters on private property, and I could imagine that the supermarkets don’t want people in their dumpsters, from a liability standpoint alone. Sure we all waste too much, and that food was well packaged and protected. It just seems that one could get in quite a bit of trouble for this.

Any Thoughts?

I believe it just depends on local laws.

I believe you are right. From a legal stand-point it’s totally theft. But they are not selling it for profit; they’re even preparing and then donating the food to those who can’t afford to eat. I hope we don’t get to the point of prosecuting people like them. That’s when the system is just blatantly failing us!
