001 300x225 My Frustration with Klean Kanteen

So the kids’ birthdays are here, and I decided to splurge on some nice sippy cups for them.  I bought two Klean Kanteen sippy cups.  After shipping, each one cost me $20 a piece.  That is a lot for a sippy cup, but I was determined to get something for my children that was toxin-free.  First off let me say what I do like about these sippy cups.  1. They keep drinks cool  for a long time.  Cups tend to sit around for a while, so I was happy that the drinks stayed fresh for the day.  2.  They are toxin-free and better for my kids to drink out of.

But in my humble opinion, these two benefits are far outweighed by the issues I am having.  1.  Within a week of having them the outsides were scratched and chipped (see picture).  I got the colors because I thought they were beautiful.  Now they look like dingy, scratched-up sippy cups.  2.  My kids are sprayed in the face with their drinks when they drink out of them. There is a hole in the top for the cup to be able to breathe, but it sprays my kids in the face .  They don’t like drinking out of them for this reason.

My frustration?  I paid $20 a piece for these cups and they are scratch up and don’t work very well within the first week of having them.  Do I love that they are toxin-free?  Yes.  But it doesn’t do any good to have a toxin-free cup that my children can’t drink from without getting sprayed in the face.  Not to mention the cups now look terrible because of the scratched up surface.

If you really want to try the product, I suggest going with the stainless steal and not the colors.  But be prepared to deal with your children being splattered in the face with their drinks.

Do you use the Klean Kanteen sippy cups?  Has your experience been the same or the opposite?  I’d love to hear!

I have a 14 month old who uses a KK sippy cup in blue. He has been using it since January and the bottom is extremely dented since he LOVES to throw his sippy cup. It really hurts when it lands on my toes. :-) It is also scratched. However, I do not have the problem with the liquid squirting him in the face. Do you have the clear plastic piece on the top? You can always buy a Built NY Neoprene sleeve to hold them to prevent the denting and scratching. I love mine but do not like the scratches and dents as well!

I do have the clear plastic piece on the top. It still squirts both of them.

My kids don’t have Klean Kanteen. I bought Foogo by Thermos stainless steel sippy cup for my 1yr DD and straw cup for my 4yr DS. They have been wonderful to use and have withstood my 2 kids. I bought mine at Target. Straw cup was $15.95 and sippy cup was $17.95. They come in blue and pink/purple.

We have Kleen Kanteens with the spouts – not the sippys. The reason it squirts, or with the spouts, squeaks, is because the metal does not give the way plastic does. It’s inherent to the type of bottle. I suggest getting the spouts instead of the sippy tops (if your kids are old enough to drink out of them.) And we just have metal, not colors, and no scratches. We’ve had them over a year now. But the Kanteen sleeves would work well for covering them up and also keeping the drinks cold.

Have you contacted the company to tell them about your experience? In most cases, when we contact a company after having a negative experience, they are more than willing to correct the problem or compensate in some fashion.

I have the pink and the stainless one. I was also incredibly disappointed when the pink one was scratched and dented within a day. I took off the sippy tops and put back on the sports top though because my daughter (18 months) seems to enjoy drinking out of those a lot more and it doesn’t spray on her! I’ve tried every stainless option out there and still feel the KK is the best though…

My 3 year old has a Klean Canteen, and we don’t use that type of lid, she has one of spouts that you pull up to open, and it does not leak too much; you know the one they have on some disposible water bottles. however, I am not a big fan, because after a few hours the water gets a funny taste, I assume from the alumium or whatever it is.

Not aluminum… Why did you buy this cup? So you could drink from aluminum? You must have a lot of money to blow… Why buy such an expensive cup and not even know anything about the cup, including the name, its Klean Kanteen. The website specifically says that the paint will chip. Did any of you Money savin’ / SPENDIN’ Momma’s do your homework before spending twenty dollars on a sippy cup?

In response to Jennifer, the KKs are made out of medical grade stainless steel. That’s what’s so good about them. Given their makeup, I’m not sure there is any way that they could transfer/impart flavors to your liquids – at least I’ve never run into that. I have the sport top also. It does squeak if you don’t loosen the lid to allow for some air transfer. With the lid screwed on very tight, it’s just too hard to suck water out. Other than that, I love my KK.

My daughter has the sippy cup, and my son the sport bottle. I bought the unpainted ones because I read some review about the paint chipping, and didn’t want to deal with that. I am sure the company is aware of the problem, but I don’t know if they are addressing it. I haven’t, though, had any problem with the cup squirting liquid in my daughter’s face – that doesn’t seem right. I would definately contact the company about that problem.

I never tried KK, but did buy Sigg. My son LOVES Sigg and it seems to hold up well to being dropped, etc. This is the first one I bought my youngest: http://g-ecx.images-amazon.com/images/G/01/ciu/df/dc/0a7a810ae7a078f158c1c110.L.jpg

I found his on sale for 9.99 at EarthFare and he loved it, so I ended up getting one for my oldest son and 2 more for my hubby and I!

We have the non-coloured original ones. They dent for sure, especially if you chuck them! I find the Avent sippy part isn’t great at all, they leak in the Avent cups as well as the Klean Kanteens, they’re just not a great design. There is a bit of a reservoir behind the sippy lid that can then drip out of the air vent! We still use bottles a bit and the avent nipples work great with them.

I have the stainless steel bottles and love them. I didn’t have any spraying problems. I agree with one person who said you should contact the company. I had a problem with the screw-on lid for the bottle I bought myself and they quickly sent me a new one free of charge.

I have the pink and blue as well, and have been frustrated at the dings, but at least mine were a great deal (under $10 each). I haven’t had the spraying problem though. I use the sippy lid without the plastic disc seal on the bottom of it, so maybe that helps with that issue.

I bought the whole fam SIGG bottles this summer. The kiddie cups come with tops that cover the sport like top. Love them. But of course, my kids are older (8, 6 and 3) and can open the sport bottle top themselves.

I too paid a pretty penny, but think it was worth it. My three year old dropped and dented his the first day :( but oh well! I have also since picked up a ton of OGGI bottles for only $7 at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

I have not tried this brand.

I too bought an OGGI sippy from Marshalls. Unfortunately within one day the painted design of an octopus, stingray and turtle were smudged and runny. Pretty unbelievable being that I only handwashed it, even though it’s supposedly dishwasher safe. I’m returning it today and have a mind to alert OGGI as well as the CPSC.

That is way to much for a sippy cup. I would never buy a sippy cup for that amount at all. I would much rather teach my kids to drink out of regular cup.

payday advance online, the Klean Kanteens, like the SIGG and many others work well as waterbottles for going out when you don’t want to be using a cup. Klean Kanteen offers a large number of different tops, including the sippy made by Avent, so it isn’t just a sippy cup. They’ll last right through school and beyond if they aren’t destroyed before!

I was wondering if you ever heard back from the company? There is a co-op going on & they are 40% off I am thinking about getting some for the whole family including gifts for X-mas or my Mom & brothers. I wanted to get the colors but remembered seeing this post so part of me wants to stick with the SS ones

Hi,
I found this thread while searching on Klean Kanteen sales. I have discovered that the Born Free “Sipple” works great with my KK and totally solved the squirt in your face issue. :) Just wanted to share that. I love my KK.

I bought 2 Kleen Kanteen sippy cups over 2 years ago (they did not make colors back then.) We still have one them, the other one was lost a few weeks ago. It still works and looks great, now we don’t have the sippy top anymore but the sports top… I think I saves a lot, because usually people go through lots of plastic sippy cups.

i noticed above that a few people mentioned contacting the company- and i did when i discovered my 10 month old baby had chewed off A LOT of paint off his brand new klean kanteen after two days use. when i investigated the matter is discovered on their website stainless bottles are recommended for “children who chew on things” but this is certainly buried under all their propoganda about how buying their product for your baby (and they say ‘baby’ gives you peace of mind!)

when i contacted the company, instead of offering me a refund or offering an explanation of why a product marketed in part, toward babies (IT IS A SIPPY CUP) they wrote:
“While we do realize that toddlers put things in their mouths that they shouldn’t, our kanteens are not intended to be chewed on. I understand that it happens, but we cannot be responsible for the things your child is allowed to chew on. If it is a problem, or your child is ambitious about chewing on his kanteen, or if it is not possible to monitor your child and keep them from chewing on it, I would recommend the plain stainless kanteen with no kolor or an insulated sleeve.”

(and yes- our baby was quirted in the face- i kept thinking i didn’t have the sippy part in properly)

My 2.5 year old has been drinking from klean kanteens for more than a year. It worked fine at first, but then it started leaking. I am very careful to put all the pieces together carefully, but still it leaks. It leaks worse if she turns it the wrong way, which she often does. Several months ago her pink one got a scratch and not long after that half the paint began to chip off. The stainless one still looks great, but the pink one looks ridiculous. I’m exploring other brands now as my second daughter will soon be needing one.

I have an easy solution to most of these problems – the Klever Kover! I bought Klean Kanteen sippies for my kids too but quickly found the sweating and denting to be an issue. My son refused to hold b/c it was cold and wet and one drop on the pavement left ugly marks. So I started making protective covers which blossommed into my company, Cocoozy.
I designed a product called Klever Kover specifically for the Klean Kannteen sippy, which keep it insulated and protected. It works beautifully and will keep those shiny finishes forever. This cover will also fit most other available wideneck bottle (glass, plastic, etc.) so you can use it on other bottles , like if you have more than one child. Check out Cocoozy bottle covers on Amazon.com or cocoozy.com!

Hi – we also just noticed that our 14 month old chewed off a lot of paint on her OGGI sippy stainless steel cup, with an aquarium scene painted on the outside. I just sent a message to the company but am not optimistic I’m going to get a straight answer – I don’t care at all about the cup itself or any of that, I just want to make sure that my baby wasn’t eating some kind of crappy paint imported from China with lead in it or God knows what else. Does anyone know what the deal is with these cups, and if the paint has any toxic chemicals in it?

Ivy September 19, 2011 at 2:21 pm

@Russ, did you ever end up getting an answer from Oggi? We’ve just had the same issue with out 18 month old and I’m leery of the paint although it states that it’s BPA free I’m guessing that the paint on the outside might not be so friendly. :(

Russ September 20, 2011 at 11:22 am

Hi there – yes, I did get a response that the paint did not have lead or other harmful chemicals in it, which was a relief. They were actually pretty good about us and sent us a stainless steel cup (no paint!) for free.
