Gardens, Sinkholes and Strange Carrots

Many of you are probably wondering what has been going on with my garden.  To be honest, I’ve procrastinated showing you all because it’s pretty pitiful. Georgia recently had some pretty serious flooding problems, and with those problems came a huge sinkhole right under (and beside) my garden.

The sinkhole starts at the bottom of the picture and goes about 7-8 feet past the other end of my garden bed.  The hole on the other end goes several feet deep and is an obvious disaster waiting to happen.  Our landlord is going to have to move my precious garden to bring in a truck to fill the hole.

So, everything has pretty much died off in my garden, except for the marigolds, some carrots and green beans.  Amazingly, the marigolds have done the best out of anything I planted.  And these I planted from seeds.  The ones I picked up as plants from Home Depot have since died, but the seeded ones keep going strong.

Today I picked the last of my living produce from the garden.  Here are the last of my carrots and green beans:

And someone needs to call Hugh Jackman and tell him I have his next co-star:

This mutant carrot will ward off all the bad guys.

In summary, my garden area has to be moved to fill in the massive sink hole.  I was planning on planting some things for fall, but now I think I may just wait to figure out where I’m moving things next.   How have you all been doing with your gardens?  I’d love to hear your updates!

We are mentally cursing our rocky soil over here, ha ha ha! I tell ya. Our collards and cabbage and broccoli plants look like miniature versions of adult plants. They grow . . . but slooooowly. At this rate, we’ll have to harvest all 7 plants to make one pot of collards for new years! We need to build garden boxes and just give up on trying to “enrich” this GA clay stuff with our beloved compost.

Fortunately I’m still being able to pick up some tomatoes and peppers from my garden. The flood, also affected them a lot, some of my plants died but others are still standing and producing..

I am glad I am not the only one producing strange looking carrots LOL! Mine looked like yours, I still wonder why they grew that way…I have never seen carrots as funky looking as the ones from my garden. :O)

Sorry about your flooding!! Did you know you can return dead plants to Home Depot (& Lowes) with a receipt for up to a year after purchase? Just an FYI!

I still have some peppers too. But I don’t know how to get plants in containers to bear bigger fruit. So we had lots of mini tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, and sweet potatoes about 1/6th of the regular size! It’s ok though, the kids and I learned a lot about plants. And the produce still tasted great!

When I lived in Virginia my kale did better in the winter than in the summer. I haven’t planted anything yet since moving to Maryland.

OMG! That mutant carrot made me laugh! Looks like some of the things I’ve pulled out of my own garden. Hilarious.
