We have been shopping for and desperately need a new shade tree! We have no shade on the south side of our house, so it will help us with our AC bill and will provide a new shaded play area for the kids. The shade tree they play under now is literally falling apart and isn’t safe for them to play under.

I need some grass see for my lawn and yard. I might rent a lawn aerator as well.

Thanks!!

Erika April 30, 2009 at 11:22 pm

The $100 would go towards turning my all dirt back yard into a garden. There’s a ton to be done but that $100 would be a much needed helpful start! I’m thinking sprinkler/dripper system and retaining wall type things to build our gardening beds.

I need to landscape the area around my pool.

Leslie April 30, 2009 at 11:50 pm

There is an elderly, 87 year old gentlemen who lives across the street from you. He is on a fixed income and can’t afford any extras. In front of his home is a lot full of dirt. I would use the $100.00 to plant a beautiful garden for him that would give him many hours of pleasure. He did not ask for this, but since I am a gardener I thought it would be lovely to do something for someone else. This money would definitely go a long way in giving him some pleasure. Thanks for the great contest!

Leslie April 30, 2009 at 11:51 pm

Sorry, I made a mistake: THere is an elderly 87 year old gentlemen who lives across the street from ME not you. SORRY

Shelli May 1, 2009 at 12:05 am

I would either install a garden path or start a new flower bed in the front yard. Thanks!

Shelly T. May 1, 2009 at 12:10 am

I would use the gift card to purchase supplies to reseed our lawn. We have huge areas that no grass is growing and it really needs to be redone.

Ceecebug May 1, 2009 at 12:27 am

There is sooo much I would love to do in both my front and backyard. So many great projects to do. I would love to build the kids table for my grandchildren. They would enjoy it for play, for helping Papa with the garden and also for BBQs.

Tina May 1, 2009 at 12:41 am

I would use the gift certificate to buy flowers for my many flower beds that I can’t seem to get under control.

John May 1, 2009 at 12:42 am

The flower beds in front of my house need some attention, I would use the card to buy mulch and plants for them and a hanging plant for the empty plant hook. I’d probably also buy a tree trimmer to fix up the tree on the front lawn. It has alot of dead branches.

Tina May 1, 2009 at 12:43 am

Rebecca May 1, 2009 at 7:07 am

Wow, we just planted our tiny garden this year. We only had one available bed about 9×4 feet. So, I’d love to prepare another bed and maybe plant some more veggies!

Funyon May 1, 2009 at 7:10 am

I would use it to build an above ground veggie garden (actually based on the one you posted about!) I am in the process of buying a house but sadly the current owners just sprayed (they are golfers, not gardeners :-) and I wouldn’t risk putting my carefully tended to container garden into a sprayed ground. Thanks for all your gardening ideas as this is my first year of a veggie garden too. Here’s a thrifty idea back at you. I have some of my veggie plants, snap peas, cilantra, tomatos in a hanging garden that was made by recycling 2 liter pop containers, and heating the tops so they bow inwards. The bottom 2 inches was cut off and is used as a water collector underneath when it is finished. The plant is put in the opening (which is now bowed inwards) with the leaves sticking out of the top of the pop container and the roots hanging out in the bottle (we did when they were still small) we then flipped the container (bottom up in the air) and add our dirt/mulch/compost/sand mixture to anchor the roots. Finally we punched some holes in the bottom of the bottle (which being upside-down is now facing up) and hung them. Now when the plants are watered the excess water can drain out the bottom (which is the top of the pop container) and the plants can be hung by a window. Good for us because we tend to overwater or underwater our plants. :-)

Renita Hegner May 1, 2009 at 7:23 am

I want to make a butterfly and bee
garden by planting lots of flowers that attract them. I
heard that there is a honey bee
colony collapse and I think by planting flowers that they like that maybe it will help their
situation.

karen May 1, 2009 at 7:48 am

I would use it to build a trellis in my garden for zuchinnis & beans. Fun for the kids to play under!

Eileen May 1, 2009 at 7:56 am

Thanks for the contest! I would buy a composting bin, grass seed, hay or straw to cover it (or something else that’s dog friendly), and a couple of gardening tools and pots to add to my tiny collection. We moved into our house last fall and this year I am pretty much just maintaining what is here, but there has been (and still is) some serious weeding to do. I have also started an herb container garden and think I’ll need more containers!

Christy May 1, 2009 at 8:00 am

I’d use it for one of the building projects—either the serving cart or storage trunk. One thing, it would be DH who’d be doing the building. :)

Stephanie May 1, 2009 at 8:03 am

I would first put in a drip irrigation system. Any money left would be used to expand my SF garden. How great would that be? :)

Crystal May 1, 2009 at 8:08 am

I would probably use the gift card to add a couple more raised beds to our garden.

I would put it toward a culinary herb garden.

Kisha May 1, 2009 at 8:26 am

I would use it to make some raised beds to grow vegetables and herbs, which I’ve been begging for, for months! Also, I’d get some perennials to landscape our lot. We have a big lot and did some clearing and we want to plant butterfly bushes and just naturalize the back edge to encourage bees, butterflies and birds around here. If I had money leftover from those, then I would get some decor to decorate our screened in porch to make it more enjoyable and entertainable.

Alissa May 1, 2009 at 9:16 am

shamayne everitt May 1, 2009 at 1:34 pm

My husband and I recently bought a house (less than 2 yrs ago) and this year we are tackling gardening. This summer is all about clearing out the weeds and such and planting flowers and making our house look appealing from the outside…so far no curb appeal. It always feels good to pull up to your house and see it looking beautiful! Also with these economic times we would like to look into growing our own veggies and such so I am excited to learn how to have a green thumb!

jen thorpe May 1, 2009 at 2:09 pm

Again, love your site! I also love the Home Depot Garden Club. I found the garden site about a month ago while surfing for info on planting my tomatoes. (I’ve never planted a thing in my life, so this year is an experiment.) Tomatoes, peppers, onions, strawberries, and parsley and rosemary are in! And flowers, lots of flowers. Next up: my kid’s area. I’m taking out the small patch of grass, need some weed killing fabric, need bricks, need sand. Need to get my toddler out of my tomatoes and into an area he can call his own. : )

Melissa May 1, 2009 at 6:39 pm

We are doing a surprise bathroom makeover for my mom while she is out of town next month. I would use the $100 to help to buy some of the materials for the makeover. We are also replacing the lighting in her kitchen and fixing a water damaged wall board behind her fridge. It would be such a blessing to win this. I have been trying to figure out a way that I could contribute without spending a fortune and this would be the perfect way to do it. The remodel of the Bathroom with be a complete top to bottom remake. the floor will be tile and she wants a pedestal sink and we have to take a wall out. We also will be stripping wall paper and repainting. This money would pay for part of the things we need to do this. I REALLY hope I win!!!! Thanks for doing this!

Because I have three dogs, I’ve been thinking about a raised garden bed to help keep them out of my tomato plants; there’s nothing like a dog that feels the need to help you “water” your plants..ugh! The ones I’ve seen that are pre-fab are way too expensive and not very attractive. I love the plans for the raised bed at the Home Depot Garden Club site. That’s a project my husband and I could do during our upcoming vacation.

My husband and I are about to start our home garden. We are looking into compose bins right now! Cannot wait to start and I know $100 goes a long way (if I win)

Marie Alcorn May 2, 2009 at 3:04 pm

We live on the top of a former department store on our main street that is now condos. Last year my husband did a fantastic job on our rooftop deck with morning glories and other cascading plants that the whole community could enjoy viewing as they drove along the parkway. Unfortunately he spent an extreme amount of time watering. I would like to purchase a drip system so that my husband wouldn’t have to personally water so much and I could enjoy him as much as the community enjoys his hard work!!

Catherine May 2, 2009 at 3:07 pm

Just forwarded this link to my in-laws and parents about the giveaway. They are very big in to gardening and acting as our mentors into building our very own home garden. Thanks!

Something that will go on the ground by the mail box. Something whimsical and unique.
If there is any money left a unique tree that will actually have some change of color in Florida. To give a semblence of change of season into Fall.

My 4-year-old son and I are going to plant a veggie garden and he wants to build a birdhouse too. This would be perfect for this thrifty mama too!

Faythe May 4, 2009 at 7:40 pm

I have been a subscriber to Home Depots garden club since one opened near by (about 25 miles from my rural home). I love all there DIYs & Idea columns and their expert advice! Their newsletters are full of great info too!
I have sooo many projects that I would need a million $$, LOL, but $100 sure would help immensly. I would get many bags of top soil & mulch (seems like I need it every year!) and I am sure a few new plants would find there way into my cart as well. Oh, and I am looking for super-duper bug dope! I am allergic to pollen & if that wasn’t bad enough also to just about every critter that bites! It used to be just bees & wasps, now everything munches away happily on me, making me miserable & not being able to get out in the garden !

my first visit, I really like your site!

I left my email on your sign up for leave a reply.

Faythe May 4, 2009 at 7:43 pm

I found your great webblog through Nicole’s Nickels.

I will be back to your blog for sure!

Jennifer May 6, 2009 at 4:44 pm

We just bought a new home last year (prior to the Tax Credit becoming something that I wouldn’t have to pay back!) and we need to do a lot in our yard. This year we’re building a Recession Garden to help with food costs. We’re also looking at improving upon the landscaping and moving random lillies that have popped up all over the yard! I think the $100 would best be put towards find a soluntion for the small but steep hill on the side of our yard that makes us worry about the lawn mower tipping over (or mowing down a chain link fence which I have been told is impossible but still believe may happen). We’re thinking of either using a ground cover or buying some edging/landscaping stones and filling the area in to creat a flatter surface. Please save us from lawn mower aerobics!

Sarah May 6, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Every summer, we plant vegetables on our small backyard patch. I would use it to try planting other vegetables than usual and perhaps small pots of herbs as well.
