Home Depot Trip + Gardening Updates

in Home and Garden

After joining the Home Depot Garden Club, I received some pretty awesome coupons in the mail.  I got a $10/50 purchase coupon, a B1G1 house plant coupon and some more.  I was so excited about it because I needed to get some things.  I got soaker hoses,  another regular hoses (we needed these things badly), an adapter, marigolds (to ward off the little rodents), and a solar powered gopher/groundhog  repellent.  It repels them with the noise. It was clearanced down to $9!! Similar ones sell for $30 on Amazon!  And it’s lucky I found it, because we have some serious ground hog issues.

$42.68 has been added into my yearly gardening expenses.

We’ve been enjoying our garden so much this past week.  We’ve been eating peas, green beans, pinto beans and tomatoes.

We’re having to pick the tomatoes right after they start turning, or else the bugs attack!  As you can see from this picture here:

But check out how well my garden is looking:

You can see the pumpkin plants here in the front.  Monstrous aren’t they?  The other bed is starting to really recover from the ant infestation.  The only things I lost were the cantaloupe plants, and it looks like the onions are not recovering either.

The squash is doing extremely well.  Check out this little sucker:

And I’m happy to report that I have more hair for my garden!  My son got his head shaved today, and I will bury the hair around my garden.  The human scent wards off things like rabbits and other little animals.

Have you been gardening with me?  I’d love to see or hear about your updates! Please feel free to share and link to your blog posts in the comment section.

We have our square foot garden boxes made, filled with a great mix of dirt, and all our soaker hoses ran. We’re in Vegas (yes, we are attempting a garden in the desert) and we fear we will fry anything if we planted right now, so we’re watering our dirt until it gets cooler =o). Love getting inspiration and excitement from watching your gardening success though.

did you know that you can scratch you childrens initials, name or a design with a pen or nail, about 1/8 inch deep in a pumpkin when it is small and as it grows it will form a callus and will show up when the pumpkin is mature. If you have a pumpkinslot of them this is kinda fun for children, I have even heard of people ‘molding’ their pumpkins as they grow, ending up with square or unusual shaped pumpkins on purpose.

If you ar having bird issues. hang a christmas decoration on your tomato plant. when the birds try to peck at it they leave. us can use this on fruit trees too.

Wow, your tomatoes look great! I only have 2 large tomatoes growing, but at least 50 cherry tomatoes just waiting to turn- I’m anxiously waiting :)

Here’s my garden update this week (more of a fresh garden recipe, but you can see the veggies)

my in-laws pick their tomatoes when they start turning and let them ripen on their window sills.

I am having the same problem with those buggers attacking my tomatoes. I noticed you picked that one, do you think it is ok to cut off the affected parts of the tomatoes and still eat them?

Our blackberries are ripening now and the squash will be ready to pick – maybe today, I hope. The green peas, broccoli & cabbage are done. Potatoes should be ready to dig next month and I’ve got 5 rows of sweet corn that are growing tall but I don’t expect the ears to be ready until late July or August – we planted late due to the rain. Same thing with the tomatoes. Also have green beans and zipper peas planted, and two cantaloupe plants.

It all looks great! We started our garden late because of a cool wet spring, but it is all starting to really grow now! No fruit yet, but it looks like we are getting ready to have some blooms.
Here is my most recent garden pictures:

My tomatoes and peppers are almost ready to pick but I’ve noticed the leaves have big holes or have been eaten, could be the ants? My broccoli plant totally disappear for the same reason…

our tomatoes have been under severe attack this year as well! Needless to say we have fried many green ones!
