Rice socks are just that. One sock filled with rice…pure joy! You can sew them up or just use an extra long sock that can be secured with a knot.
Rice socks can be microwaved on high for about a minute to create a heat pack for:
- back pain
- cramps
- growing pains
- headaches
- “hot water bottles” for chilly beds and car seats
- sore muscles
You can also pop them in the freezer for a cold pack. These can be used for:
- cooling an uncomfortable fever
- headaches
- reducing swelling
I’ve read about women alternating hot and cold rice socks as a labor comfort.

Add cloves!
We are currently using rice socks to put in with our 2 week old orphaned kitties to keep them warm. Works great!
Instead of warming up the entire house for just my husband and I, we wear warmer clothes, drink hot beverages and warm up our RICE SOCK every 30 to 45 minutes and keep them in our laps while reading, watching TV or spending time on the computer; that way we can keep the thermastat turned down to 68 and still be comfortable.
My smart daughter, made pocket sized RICE BAGS and heated them in the microwave just before sending her three daughters off to walk to school; they loved having them in one of their pockets.
i love this idea. I have a dog who is always cold. Tbis would be perfect to put under his blanket at night!!

Tammy, I think it will depend on how much rice you have in it. My husband and I don’t use socks, we sew a bag and put about 4 to 6 cups of rice in each bag; they stay hot/warm for about 45 minutes after we heat them for 3 to 4 minutes on High.

We use them as boo boo packs for the kids. They are cold but never so cold that we have to worry about it hurting them or their skin. My sister in law made them a ton of them in different shapes, sizes and colors to use up her left over fabric!
They stay hot for awhile. I used this for my back when I was having back pain and back spasms. Worked like a charm! In the morning no more pain! Love this!
