Last month I had the opportunity to speak at a Tea Talk about Real Food on a Budget and Meal Planning. I had no idea what kind of goodies would be served at the event, but I thought crumpets to go along with the tea would be positively perfect! And what are crumpets you say? Well, we here in the States know them as good old-fashioned English Muffins, and they are actually really easy to make. Here’s how to make English Muffins from scratch (it’s super easy- don’t be nervous!).
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cup milk, slightly warmed
- 5g dried yeast
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 lb whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 cup warm water
- 1 tsp salt
- 1tsp baking powder
- olive oil for your pan
Instructions
- Combine warm milk with dried yeast and sugar, and let sit for a few minutes until the yeast is activated (bubbles and foams).
- Add yeasty liquid mixture to your flour in a mixer and blend together.
- Slowly add your warm water until you get a good thick cream type mixture (it should not be lumpy at all).
- Cover and store in a warm (not hot) location for about an hour or two. The mixture will rise a lot, so make sure you have plenty of room in your bowl for it to grow.
- Stir in your baking powder and salt, and now you are ready to cook your crumpets!
- Add oil to your pan that is on medium heat, and using canning lids, pour a little bit of the mixture into the lids that are in your pan (I used a cast iron pan).
- Cook for a couple of minutes until the tops start to bubble, and then flip over and cook for another minute or two.
- Remove from heat, allow to cool and then remove the crumpet (English Muffin) from the lid.

These turned out positively delicious and were perfect to serve with tea! And I especially love that making them myself means I can use organic and whole grains to make them. Healthy and delicious!
Have you tried this recipe? Tell how they turned out for you!

Cool! I’ll have to try, I’ve often wondered if you can make English Muffins from scratch easily
But crumpets and english muffins aren’t the same thing whenever I’ve had them!
