Wondering how to make icing with confectioners sugar? Here’s how to make your own healthy icing recipe or frosting recipe.
How to Make Confectioners Sugar Using Raw Sugar
Raw sugar or whole cane sugars are healthier options to choose when making your confectioners sugar. Sugar in excess of course isn’t healthy, no matter the type. But if you’re going to make some sweets, using raw sugar or whole cane sugar is the better option.
Ingredients:
- 2 Cups of Raw Sugar or Raw Whole Cane Sugar (Sucanat)
- That was simple, right?
- Add sugar to a well-dried blender (we don’t want any moisture in our sugar).
- Turn the blender on high until the sugar forms a nice powdery substance.
- Sift out any pieces that didn’t turn powdery enough with a sifter.
- Revel in your “healthier” powdered sugar that’s perfect for sprinkling, baking or making confectioners sugar icing.
How to Make Confectioners Sugar Icing Recipe – Vanilla
Ingredients:
- 2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon homemade vanilla
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
Directions:
With a mixer, combine sugar, oil/butter, vanilla and milk. Beat until fluffy. If frosting is too sweet, add a little more milk. Use right away or refrigerate for up to 10 days.
How to Make Confectioners Sugar Icing Recipe – Chocolate
Ingredients:
- 2 cups sifted confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon homemade vanilla
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
- 3 tablespoons raw cocao powder
Directions:
With a mixer, combine sugar, oil/butter, vanilla and milk. Mix and then add cocao. Beat until fluffy. If frosting is too sweet, add a little more milk. Use right away or refrigerate for up to 10 days.
How to Make Confectioners Sugar Icing Recipe – Mocha Coffee
Yes, I said coffee…
Ingredients:
- 2 cups confectioners sugar
- 1/2 cup coconut oil or butter
- 1 teaspoon homemade vanilla
- 3-4 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons instant coffee or coffee ground into a fine powder.
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao
Directions:
With a mixer, combine sugar, oil/butter, vanilla and milk. Mix and then add cacao and coffee. Beat until fluffy. If frosting is too sweet, add a little more milk. Use right away or refrigerate for up to 10 days.
And yes it is as good as it looks. Now slab some of that yummy goodness on a muffin or cake.
One final note: If you use raw whole cane sugar, you will get a slight molasses flavor. If you aren’t a fan of that, stick with just raw sugar. You can of course use regular bleached sugar, but that’s not the way to keep this recipe healthier.
What is your favorite variation on this frosting?

I just bought confectioners sugar yesterday but I am going to try this..
Thanks!
i found that my coffee grinder makes powdered sugar really well!!! i don’t have any lumps just pure powder! works with peppercorns to make super finely grounded pepper too(i add course sea salt and peppercorns together to make steak rub too)
Awesome this just made my day! I’m allergic to corn so I can’t have regular powdered sugar anyways!
Oh, so glad you will be able to have it again Merissa!
Nice tip! I was lucky enough to find organic powdered sugar for .79 cents a while ago, and of course I bought 2, but this is great!
