I recently went and saw The Lorax in theaters. It made for a cute movie, but the overall theme, or “moral” of the story came across to me loud and clear.
No amount of profit and convenience is worth it if we ruin our planet. Greed has the power to ruin our environment and human health.
Frankly, we are already seeing this.
From tragic oil spills to pink slime, and to genetically modified seeds that ruin our health and the environment, it is not too far of a stretch to compare today’s world to that of the world left behind after the Once-ler’s greed wrecked havoc.
The Once-ler represents today’s Big Business. Big Agriculture and Big Pharma are motivated by profits with little concern for the consequences of their actions, and it continues to show in the decisions that are made by these industries. As the food supply becomes more highly processed, genetically modified and controlled by big businesses, the human population becomes dependent on paying for a less than perfect product (think of the Air for sale by O’Hare ), that should normally be available in plenty and naturally.
The simple freedom to actually leave town is controlled by O’Hare, who runs a monopoly on the clean air supply. Trees are no longer around to naturally clean the air.
April is known now as Earth Month, when people and companies across the world focus on being green and helping the environment. But I would like to put out a call to action for people to start making green lifestyle changes. It’s not about being perfect, but about making small changes that help. Unless people actually stand up and start making changes vs. just putting it off until tomorrow, nothing will get better.
In the words of The Lorax: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” What are some small/big changes that you can start making in order to better our world?
