clean stove hood filter 300x200 Natural and Thrifty in 365: #332 No Scrub Vent Hood Filter Cleaner

I honestly don’t remember the last time I cleaned the filters from the vent hood over the stove.  And that’s not good.  The grunginess of the task just seems so daunting.

Here’s a tip for me that you just might want to use in your house.  Don’t waste your time scrubbing and certainly don’t douse them with chemical cleaners.  If you’ve got a pot big enough, you can boil your hood filters in baking soda and water to remove the grease and grime.  Seems painless!

Get all the details and see the results here.

Um…never. The house is only 5 years old so hopefully I won’t gag too much now when I clean it.

I seriously never would have thought to clean it. Only reason I did was because this yellow stuff kept dripping on my stove and when I looved up, I saw yellow all over it. Spent like 30 min on it but couldn’t get it all off. Hope this method works!!!

Wouldn’t it be easier to just replace it??!!

I pitched my filter last time. I don’t think it was cleaned, ever, before we moved it. GROSS!!

Also, I cleaned the vents in the bathrooms! Talk about gross, again!

We replaced all the appliances that were in the house we bought 2 years ago, including the stove vent…but when we took down the vent I saw the filter and it looked like it had been there since the house was built in 1989…gross!!

Funny that you should ask. I did mine yesterday. I do that nasty job at least 1 time a month so that it does not get very bad.

Lora July 27, 2012 at 11:15 pm

I run mine through the dishwasher about every 6 weeks. I used to work in restaurants where they had to be cleaned daily, so I know how important it is to keep them clean. Luckily I can pop them into the dishwasher!

I clean homes for a living and discovered years ago the dishwasher is the way to go for cleaning the filters!Tack a note on your dishwashing detergent box or dishwasher to remind you to stick it in when you’re running the next load.

I make a spray of water and a couple of drops of peppermint oil; it is one of the best de-greasers I’ve found. It makes the house smell good too! This also works in the vent hood, and all over the sides and back of the stove/oven and the wall behind the oven.
