Order Your Inner Life

Ordering Your Private World, by Gordan MacDonald. Chapters 1-2.
“Are you taking the time regularly to order your inner life? (16)”
What is the inner life? If I ask “how is your quiet time,” you would know exactly what I am asking. I love the metaphor for the heart that MacDonald uses at the beginning of chapter two. He compares it to the bridge of a submarine. While turbulance may be going on outside of the submarine, a captain knows that all is well as long as the bridge is in order.
What happens to you emotionally when an unexpected bill shows up, and the struggles in life become almost unbearable? Most of the time we reach a point of melt down or blow up. This is all a result of our inner worlds not being in order.
“Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Proverbs 4:23.
Springs of life? Wow. In our culture, it is go go go. Stay busy. Our hearts are the last things that most of us nurture. There are so many things to do and get done, that we aren’t focusing on the most important thing in our lives. So when the hard times come, our “bridge” isn’t orderly and capable of handling the tough situations. Submarines have drills, and practice for rough times. That way when the war times come, the captain is confident that the crew is ready. We need to practice, so to speak. Spending time in prayer, meditating on the word, and focusing on nurturing our hearts will prepare us for rough waters.
Challenge for this week: Spend at least 5 minutes a day in prayer. Don’t focus on the quantity of time, but rather the quality of that time. Make sure everything is quiet so that there is only you and God. Be sure to thank Him for all the blessings you have, no matter how small.
