After mentioning on Facebook the other day that we were enjoying some delicious homemade organic hot chocolate, quite a few of you asked for my recipe. It’s really quite simple to make, and you only need three ingredients:
4-6 cups Organic Milk
4 T Raw Cacao (any raw cacao will do, but I like Navitas Naturals)
4 T Sucanat (or another natural sweetener)
Directions:
Over medium heat, warm up about 4-6 cups of organic milk in a sauce pan until it starts to steam (do not boil). Reduce heat and add in about 4 heaping spoons of raw cacao (or 4 T).
I’m not one to measure precisely. The way I figure it, the more chocolate the better! Wisk the raw cacao in the milk until it’s dissolved. Now it’s time to add some sweetness.
Add in about 4 tablespoons of sucanat. If you like your hot chocolate a little less sweet, I recommend slowly adding sucanat until you reach the desired sweetness. Stir until it’s dissolved and then pour into your mugs.
If you are feeling really adventurous, add in a little chili powder and make some organic marshmallows to add to your delicious chocolatey goodness. In all it takes under 10 minutes to make, and you have a healthier version of a winter favorite.
Do you have something you add to your cocoa to make it extra special? I’m always up for trying new recipes!

Do you (or anyone else) know if they sell the Sucanat or Cacao at Whole foods or Trader Joes? Trader Joes would be cheapest besides Amazon. I know it’s probably cheaper on Amazon, but I wanted to run out and grab some. Do you think making it with another milk would be ok? We have an allergy over here. Looks awesome!
I’m pretty sure that they do
And I bet you could do this with any type of milk.
Thanks for posting. I am embarrassed to say that the last hurrah of white sugar in my house is the Nestles Chocolate mix! Shameful, considering I have all of these ingredients on hand! I just haven’t taken the time to get the proportions right.
How thrifty is it? I saw a farm produced mix at Whole Foods but since we love it I opted for 365.
Since I use all of the ingredients regularly for other things, it’s something I can make with items on hand. Not sure about the cost though.
I would imagine it’s cheaper than buying an organic cocoa mix.
Remind me why u use cacao instead of cocoa. I remember you explaining this in the past. But it has slipped my mind
It’s raw chocolate without sugar or anything else added to it.
Thanks for Choc 101 lol. Is it pricey? Did you find it Whole Foods Market?
I usually buy it online at Amazon or Vitacost. It’s cheaper there than buying it at WF.
