Re-Purpose Old Clothes for Pants or Longies

For those of you that don’t cloth diaper, longies are wool or fleece pants that are used over cloth diapers because they are waterproof. They make a nice waterproof cover for diapers and keep those little legs and tushies warm.

Buying new wool longies can be extremely expensive, so this is how I save money. I cut off the arms of wool sweaters to make longies for my little girl. There is a great tutorial HERE that shows you how to do this. It is so easy! Each of these took me 30 minutes or less to make. I have an Old Navy Fleece that I plan on using next to make some more.

Re Purpose Old Clothes for Pants or LongiesThis one was already cut up because I made small soakers (short covers for diapers) out of the body of the sweater earlier this year.

Each of these sweaters cost me a $1 or less at yard sales and thrift stores. Since a brand new wool longie can cost anywhere from $20-$30, or sometimes even more, I have saved a lot of money by making my own. I’m not the best sewer, so they aren’t perfect. But I think my little girl looks absolutely fabulous! And I’m so proud of myself! Even if you don’t cloth diaper, you can make warm pants for your little one by re-purposing old clothes!

You did a great job, those are adorable. I cloth diaper, but I agree that you could definitely use these for any baby!

What a cutey-pie! I definitly plan on making some shorties and longies for the new baby bean (once I figure out if it’s a girl or a boy!). BR/BR/For the shorties you made out of the lavendar sweater . . . did you just use the Katrina soaker pattern and serge or zig-zag the edges? Or, is there a recycled shorty pattern out there for free?BR/BR/I just love them!

Are you talking about the soakers I made out the pink sweater or the gray shorties?

So cute! I was lucky enough to find a 100% wool sweater @ Goodwill a few weeks ago, but haven’t gotten around to making longies yet. They look great, and your baby is too stinkin cute!
