I was asked on the Green Works post to give my recommendation for cleaning products. Mostly I make my own cleaners, and you can see how to do this HERE, but I really love Shaklee’s Organic Basic H2. Not only do I love it for “green” purposes, but also for budget purposes.
When I first found out about this product, I did a lot of research on it and was happy with what I found. Farmers actually use this product on their farms to help the ground retain moisture better, and they use it as a dewormer in their livestock (just fun facts that Shaklee doesn’t actually advertise on their site). It’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. A friend of mine said her husband used it to kill the fungus on his feet (he’d been living with it for years and nothing was working). Gross I know, but still pretty cool! Supposedly this stuff is actually safe to swallow, but I would never condone doing something like that on purpose. But you know you won’t have to freak out should there be an accidental swallowing (always contact poison control if something like this happens just to be on the safe side).
It is a great natural and green product that I simply couldn’t say enough good things about, AND it is the best bang for the buck. If you are a member, you can get a 16 oz. bottle for only $10.35! 2 drops in a spray bottle of water make glass cleaner, 1/4 tsp in a spray bottle of water makes the all-purpose cleaner and 1 1/2 teaspoons makes a degreaser. You can also add some to your laundry for extra cleaning power. This makes a 16 oz. bottle last a really long time. If you buy this product, there is really no need to buy anything else. And 1 bottle can easily last a year a more.
There are a ton of uses for this product, and all you have to do is a quick search on the internet to find out some fabulous things regarding Basic H. I consider myself similar to the Father on “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” who always said “Put some Windex on it.” My saying is much safer for your family and the environment: “Put some Basic H2 on it.”
As far as green and toxic-free go, Basic H2 is my top recommendation. And budget-wise, I really think it can’t be beat. Check it out HERE, and while you are there check out some of the other great products that Shaklee offers.
Note: I do not make any money or profit in any way by recommending this product. Nor am I in any way affiliated with Shaklee. I truly believe that it is an incredible product and a great company.

I love my Basic H2 too! I use it to clean everything from my cars to my counters. Speaking of counters~ I was introduced to it because I was tired of all the “film” left from other cleaners on our new granite counters~ this doesn’t leave a film. And it does last forever!!
Do you happen to know what the ingredients are in H2? I looked around the site, and didn’t see a list.
Thanks

I have seen the ingredients. I had to get the list from a Shaklee representative.
Here is what I know of what the ingredients are:
Basic H2 is 99.95% all natural and made from water, Alkyl Polyglucoside (from corn & coconut), Ethyoxylated Fatty Alcohol (from coconut), Xanthan Gum (from vegetables) and Methyl Chloro Isothiazolinone (biodegradable preservative).
The other .05% is in a proprietary blend.
And here is a link for further information on what Basic H2 is NOT: http://www.shaklee.com/company_getclean.shtml
TTM: Your friend whos hubby used it for his feet… How did he apply it??? I have a nasty toe nail funk, and I can’t take the meds for it (liver issues) nor would i want to take them anyway since I’m a natural kinda gal.. I’m wondering if this will work on it… I ordered some.. I’m going to give it a try..

The Thrifty Mama here: The stuff is super concentrated so I think the man used a tiny bit in a spray bottle (like with making the cleaners) and then sprayed it on there. If that doesn’t work, try making it gradually more powerful until it does work.
Thanks for the info. I think I’ll have to go buy a bottle. I currently use the Green Works products. I had just trusted the label, and didn’t think anything of it until I read your post.

I 100% completely agree with you on this! I have been on my first bottle for over 5 months now. I love cleaning without feeling like my baby will get gassed out! I also love the laundry detergent–2T per LOAD! I like chemical and phosphate free, and this is super concentrated. The shipping makes me a little green around the gills, but it is still a thrifty product because it lasts my house at least 6 months! The Basic H and Laundry soap are totally worth ordering. (Like you, I’m not a “seller”, just a believer).
You sound like my mom! She’s been using Shaklee products including Basic H for over 15 years. It’s a running joke in our family that if there’s a problem with anything, just use some Basic H and it’ll be fine.
I hope you don’t mind but I blogged about your post and linked to it so what few readers I have could see this. I hadn’t spent the money on these products yet, but was really tempted to try them because I believed they’d be better. Thanks for your hard work and dedication. I’m glad your blog is here for those of us who aren’t “green” just yet but trying to do better!
Hi ladies, I just want to point out that the non member price is $12.15 each. I’m really interesting in buying this! Thanks for posting about it!
Thanks so much for the reply !
I have bought some green cleaner online that worked really well, but it cost twice as much as this Shaklee product. I’m going to have to give this stuff a try, because it sounds like people really like it, and now that you mention it I vaguely remember a friend of mine saying she used this for her husband who is very allergic to all “store brand” clothing detergents.
What other products from SHaklee would you recommend? To get the membership you either have to spend 50.00 or pay 19.99 for membership. I’d rather buy something they pay for a membership. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Well Basic H will take out the “sting” from wasp and bee stings. I was stung by five yellow jackets on my back when I was about 15 and it hurt really bad. I called my mom at work and she said, “just put some Basic H on it and it will be fine!” It worked! I can still remember this and I am 39! Too Funny!

I have been using Basic H for about 30 years. LOVE it!
I have always had extremely oily skin. I have been using it for my face-wash for the same 30 years!
I have never had ANY problems with it at all! It is the ONLY thing I have been able to use that washes my skin absolutely clean and rinses absolutely clean. No residues. I try other things from time to time, but … only Basic H will do for me. I do not know what else I can use if Shaklee ever became unavailable to me!
By the way, Methyl Chloro Isothiazolinone (biodegradable preservative) – is the ingredient that makes Basic H an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. It is NOT a carcinogen, and that is the most important thing folks want to know these days.
It is however a proven irritant to 2% or less of folks who use it. I am not in that percentage, thank GOD. One of our friends would turn bright red and itch terribly when he used our Basic H. Even after rinsing it off, (which is what you are supposed to do with products containing this preservative) he would still have that effect. He simply could not use it. That was sad.
Last week I was out of laundry detergent and desperate to do a particular load of clothes. I rinsed out the laundry detergent bottle thoroughly into the wash, added about 1/2 c or more of baking soda, about 1/8 cup of Basic H, some fresh squeezed lemon juice. I had no problems with that load. It came out fresh and clean.
I am going to experiment today and see if I can do a FULL load with the Basic H, Baking Soda and lemon or lime juice. I just don’t know if I should try MORE than the 1/8th of a cup for a full load. We will see ….
Basic H is also great for SHAVING with!
It doesn’t make all that foam and lather that is so unnecessary and tends to gunk up the shavers. You get a good smooth clean shave, both women and men.
I have used it for shampoo when we have run out, too. My hair definitely needs a little conditioner for the rinse. It cleans beautifully, but my hair would be wild if I didn’t tame it a bit with a little conditioner. I mix the conditioner with the Basic H at the same time and rinse out together.
Right now I am also using it for Dish soap. I poured it straight into the soap dispenser with a few drops of a couple of my favorite essential oils. Cleans beautifully, of course. I will dilute it down quite a bit soon, as it was a quick, desperate fix that I did not pre-think very well. I am sure a dilution will be much better and far less expensive, causing my beloved Basic H to last a LOT longer!
Cheers! to a healthier life, lifestyle and environment!
