This was a good week for deals for me. I picked up 20+ pounds of sweet potatoes at the farmer’s market this morning, and spent a total of $20 on them. After the fiasco last year where I had to pay full price for organic sweet potatoes during Thanksgiving week, I decided I was NOT going to let that happen again!
These beauties cost me $1/lb, and they are “organic” and locally grown. I put organic in quotation marks, because these aren’t certified USDA organic. Many small-time farmers can’t afford to jump through the hoops and pay all the certification fees to be labeled such. But by speaking with your local farmers and asking questions, you can find out that a lot of them use organic practices in growing fruits and vegetables.
In the background in that photo you can make out some jars of goodies. We visited grandma this past week, and she sent us home with yummy preserves from her garden. There’s fig, grape, peach, pear, crab apple and strawberry. And there’s a jar of dill pickles I bought at the farmer’s market this morning as well. That was a cringe-worth $5, but oh they were such a yummy treat for everyone this afternoon!
And finally, I stopped at a local consignment sale on half-off day and bought my daughter’s entire winter wardrobe. I also got two Melissa and Doug Puzzles (Christmas Presents!), a Diego Doll and a pair of princess slippers all for a total of $43. If you need clothes for your children, half-price day at consignment sales are definitely the way to go!

Wow, those are great prices on sweet potatoes. How do you get them to last until Thanksgiving?
I cook them up and freeze them.
Thanks. We have been thinking about getting a deep freezer but we have been wondering if the extra cost of electricity to run it offsets the price we would save on sale foods.
I feel like it does Heather.
I also shop at those kind of sales. I recently (last week) bought a combo of fall and winter close for my three growing children and it only cost me $86. This cost also included 4 winter jackets. At those prices I don’t feel so sad when they grow out of them so fast. Then we donate them to a local friend or family member.
We found a local farm (well its over an hour away) that has “organic” fruits, veggies and herbs for $1/lb. or less. We are hoping to go sometime soon and stock up. I can’t wait! And I looove half off day at the consignment stores!! Way to go, thrifty mama!
