Total Spent: $20    Total Saved: ??

Everything in these photos you see is from Trader Joe’s.  For whatever reason (expiring or going bad), a local church picks up this kind of stuff from Trader Joe’s and let’s people come in and load their boxes for only a $20 donation.  The produce is organic, the bread is organic (some is gluten-free), there is whole wheat pizza dough, Trader Joe’s milk, organic yogurt, gouda cheese, organic chicken, salmon, salsa, pizzas, and some pies.

I was actually surprised that there were only about 10 people that picked up food, and a lot of the stuff left over the church had to throw away.  So if you are in the Dallas/Hiram area, send me an email and I’ll give you some specs on the location and time. There is no income limit.  Seeing as this stuff is pretty much all organic, I’m sure I saved $200 or more.  But I won’t calculate any savings for this, because there’s just no way for me to figure out exactly what I saved.

By the way, there are plenty of churches and companies around the entire U.S. that offer food pantries and such.  Check with your local Health Department to find some in your area.

I also went to CVS this week, and you can see that trip HERE.

YTD Spending: $1,552 ($37.85 weekly average over 41 weeks)
YTD Savings: $5,348 (78%)
Coupon Costs: $115

How did you find out about this church having Trader Joes food? I live in GA but unfortunately I live no where near Dallas, so I am hoping there’s a church that does the same thing nearer to me.

Amy – I found out about it through friends and family. The only suggestion I can give is to get the list of local food pantries from your health department.

Holy moly. What a great deal. Great for the end consumers, like yourself, as well as for the church, to be able to make some extra money for their causes. Awesome.

Alisha here again. I went today after finding out the location. There was a long wait, but I’m not sure if that is always the case. I am so happy with what I got for $20. Mangos, turnip greens, tomatoes, corn, oranges, sweet potatoes, cabbages, strawberries, grapes, plums, carrots, lemons, organic lettuce, organic bread, cheese and more. I plan on doing this twice a month. Thank you Thrifty Mama!!

Oh and I forgot to post that they even had pumpkins!! I got a nice, large pumpkin for my kids to carve. I was going to pay $4.50 for one at Walmart tomorrow, so I was very excited about it too!!
