Snow Days

It’s official.  This is the most snow I have seen on the ground in Georgia in over ten years.  I’m hearing and reading reports of snow storms hitting hard up north and my heart goes out to all of you stuck in several feet of snow.  Here’s how Georgia is looking right now:

Snowy Day 009 1024x768 Snow Days

Snowy Day 004 1024x768 Snow Days

I’d say we are at 3-4 inches right now, which in Georgia terms means blizzard.  I’m originally from the north, so I always find it humorous how everyone here rushes out for milk and bread at the possibility of flurries.  Luckily, I’ve mastered the art of stockpiling!  Now I just need to master the art of “how to keep the kids entertained indoors while they are sick, and all the fun is to be had outdoors.”

How are you all fairing?  Have any great indoor activity ideas for me, for two young kids that are getting over colds?

We have about 3″ of snow in South Atlanta. It’s amazing how fast it’s accumulating. My family lives in Virginia and they are just laughing at us :) I agree about the stores – milk, bread and toilet paper!

I am loving this snow!! I am in NW Atlanta and home with my 2 Newfoundland puppies. Hubby and son went to Tennessee but will be home Sunday night so I hope it stays until then! The pups are rolling around in the snow with their thick black fluffy fur and it is hilarious to watch. I hope it keeps going all night.
Enjoy the snow!! I think it is the most beautiful thing when it is freshly falling so soft and white. I find it very peaceful.

We are just west of Atlanta…we have been outside playing in the snow for most of the day! I’m from Boston, so this is nothing for me, but it’s the first real snow my boys have been able to play in. So much fun!
My kids were sick last week and they were going stir crazy. We made up a few games to get them up and about, but warm indoors.
We made a hopscotch game in the living room. Just wrote numbers on construction paper and switched them up to make it more challenging each time.
Another game they loved that we did-I got 8 pieces of construction paper and put a silly request on the back of each (i.e. spin in a circle, touch your toes) and placed them in a giant circle on the floor. Then we played music while everyone walked around the circle. When the music stops you look under the number you are standing on and you have to do what it says. My kids are 1 & 4-this game was good for almost an hour and a 1/2! lol
And of course…scavenger hunts are huge in our house! My 4 yr old loves it!
Good luck!

I’m from up north, Virginia, and we had numorous snow storms for the past couple of weeks. It was blistering cold but it was fun to see all the stores closing and kids off from school for this whole week. Apparently, there’s more snow to come, but I’m expert at shoveling snow now! :)

We are loving it! I live in Cartersville and my backyard is nothing but a hill, and we have been outside sledding ALL THE WAY DOWN! We actually flew down, not just the sit down and scoot yourself sled, real sledding! I am psyched! I am also happy to have a stockpile to keep us from being Hungry, anda generator to keep us warm!

I remember making home-made play dough as a treat for my kids when they were little.

got about 3 inches here in SE bama… built 3 snowmen with my kiddos and really enjoyed the time together. This is like once in a lifetime for us southerners! Thank goodness we had milk, bread, and TP :)

oh and just a thought, why don’t you let them make a cake if you have the stuff and the electric to do so… my kids love playing with the icing and sprinkles. Everyone will have a yummy treat in the end :) Hope the little ones are feeling better soon!

The snow is nice! As for keeping yourselves from going stir crazy: For the kids you can always do stories and crafts, if you have those supplies on hand. You can get everything ready for them and all they need are crayons and a glue stick. Even little ones can do simple crafts and the more they do them the faster you will see their skills and perceptions improve. If you only have paper and colors then jut draw. Have them request you to make things and have them make up monsters, animals, or people. Then, for the older one, you can practice cutting skills but circling his picture and having him cut it out. Dancing and playing freeze with music is always fun, too.

This is a time I wish teleportation was a reality. That way we can enjoy snow but come back home to FL without having to do any shoveling. It’s been 4 years since we’ve seen snow. And where we used to live in North VA, they have at least 3 feet already!

You could make snow ice cream for your kids! We had snow this past week in AR and made it with our kids! It would be a fun way to bring the snow indoors for the kids. Recipe is super easy: 1 cup of milk, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 4-5 cups of snow. Mix milk, sugar, vanilla first, then add snow. Enjoy!

I am here in Columbia, SC and I have at least 6-8 inches of snow and it is still snowing out there. I haven’t seen snow like this in person since I was 5 so needless to say I am like a big kid. I plan on having some fun tomorrow with my kids and also making that snow ice cream I read about earlier!! LOL
