Buying in Bulk: Strawberries

Aldi has Strawberries on sale for .99 cents a package, so I bought nine to start me out with the bulk purchasing of strawberries.  Wash, cut, freeze, and I’ll have strawberries for Jams, Smoothies, Pies and more!

Just a quick wash.  Be sure not to soak them long because you will loose vital nutrients.

Cut the tops off, and hope that you have some strawberries left over to freeze after the kids raid the kitchen.

Freeze individually on a cookie sheet for about an hour and then place in bags to put back in the freezer.  This keeps the strawberries from sticking together and becoming a big clump.

Here is a very easy strawberry jam recipe, that almost anyone should be able to make!  For those of you that don’t have an Aldi, and would still like to buy some strawberries, Meijer has them as part of the Buy 10 get the 11th free promotion.  This makes them .90 cents per package when you buy 11.  Thanks to Donna for telling me about the Meijer sale on my Facebook page.   Now go enjoy some strawberries!

In my opinion, that’s not the way to go about getting bulk strawberries! I wait until they are in season locally and get them from the farmer’s market or go to a u-pick farm. They are sooooo much tastier that way, and usually cheap at peak season when they are plentiful.

I would recommend freezing them on a cookie sheet before putting them in the ziploc. Only because when you go take them out they will be a big clump. even when I freeze in a cookie sheet first they still become a bit of a clump but it is easier to get them apart. My family loves to pick both blueberries and strawberries and freeze. there is nothing like the sweetness of picked strawberries. They are only a few cents more per pound but so much better.

My local SuperWal-mart had strawberries for a $1.00 yesterday, so if someone doesn’t have an Aldi’s they may have a near by Wal-mart with the same deal.

i found a great deal on strawberries in my lil’ ca town. my socal food store has 5lbs for only 2.99! and even raspberries, blueberries, blackberries are .99 cents.
w/ the strawberries i ended up slicing them up and freezing them for ice cream topping.

I’m really curious to know how your strawberries turn out after they’ve been frozen. How exactly do you use them? When I’ve tried freezing strawberries in this way they turn to complete mush when thawed and lose most of their flavor, not to mention texture and structural integrity. I thought I might freeze them in sugar syrup next time, but I hate to add all those calories. Do yours turn out mushy? If not, do you do something to prevent this? And if so, is there a way to still redeem them for cooking? Thanks for any tips! Oh and by the way, strawberries are super-easy to grow at home (even in pots); maybe you could add them to your garden :)

Oh no! Have you had bad experiences? I know that the plants only live for a few years, but if you mulch them in the winter they should do well for awhile. I planted bare-root plants in a container a month ago and they are putting out leaves and runners like crazy. You can plant bare-root plants in the fall, too (about $3 for 10 plants) so you could always try then if you want :)

Oh no, I wasn’t saying i had a bad experience. I was just contemplating getting some since you said they were easy to grow. I like easy! :)

all these great deals on strawberries are nice, but they are the #1 thing that are recommended to buy organic out of all produce. I can’t bring myself to buy non-organic. I wait until the organic go down in price or we go to the U-pick organic farm :)

I agree, ever since I read how contaminated nonorganic strawberries are, I can’t buy them! We are going to attempt to grow our own this year.

Too bad my Aldi was sold out by the time I got there. LOVE me some Aldi though!
Thanks for the freezing tip for the berries!

I have never had luck freezing strawberries. They come out of the freezer with almost no sweetness and then I end up adding sugar :( We are going to a u-pick in a few weeks when they come into season here. They recently became certified organic so I’m excited to bring my little guy there to eat his heart out! I’m planning to make preserves/jam/whatever out of them asap and hope they will retain sweetness, instead of freezing.

My Aldi’s have them for 99¢ and they were very fresh. Just brought in the door. LOL. Thanks for the “heads up”.

This is great! I always had trouble with my strawberries clumping together after freezing them.
