008 1024x768 Surprise Crop in My Garden

If you’ve followed along with my gardening updates, you know that the carrots I previously pulled were very tiny.  So compared to those, these bad boys are huge.  And I was really surprised to find them Friday afternoon in my garden, seeing as we have had snow and freezing temperatures for a while now.

I did a quick search on the internet, and actually found that carrots do last through the winter, and if you leave them until the following summer, then they produce seeds.  I’d always wondered how to get carrot seeds, and now the mystery is solved!  We enjoyed these beautiful carrots Friday night with dinner.

While I was out in the garden I collected a whole bunch of marigold seeds, and will plant those when the weather warms up.  I may actually start some in some pots real soon.  Marigolds are great for keeping deer, bunnies and other critters away from the garden.

You ready to follow my organic gardening for another year?  I’ve had some mishaps, some successes, and hopefully I’m a little wiser going into my second year of gardening, and will have a better end of the season harvest this year.

Are you going to be gardening with me this year?  I’d love to hear what you plan to plant, and what you are pre-planting in pots right now.   February is the month for me to plant some carrots if I want them in June, so I may start some of those in pots.  What will you be doing?

I just pulled some carrots last week too, they are super tiny and were put in the ground in November, lol.

I also have my garden started for this year in my makeshift green houses I made out of milk jugs. I just posted it if you want to take a peek.

Those carrots look good! I’ve always wanted to plant tomatoes in my backyard. Are they hard to grow? I have a small backyard so if I plant tomatoes it might vine over my wall and window. Would that pose a problem?

I just amended my soil and planted this month (in AZ). Things are looking good so far, as long as I can keep the squirrels out! I have tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, kale, garlic, romaine, cilantro, parsley, onions, broccoli, cucumbers and green beans in right now.

I can’t wait to start my garden. We will probably be starting in the next few weeks (since it is warmer in AZ) and I have so many plans! One thing that I know I want to do is have a smaller garden area just for my boys, so they can start to learn about taking care of their own garden. I can’t completely decided what we will plant, but I look forward to hearing your updates (since you helped to inspire me to start my first garden last year!). :)

I’m starting seeds for the first time this year, and we’re building our stand tonight! I’m planting lettuce, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, bell peppers, jalapenos, anaheims, carrots, onions, zucchini, yellow squash, butternut squash. I’ll be getting seedlings for herbs. We just moved to CO, so I think it’s going to be harder than growing things in TN, but we’ll see…

we had a pretty good garden last year – lettuce, kale, potatoes, strawberries, squash, broccoli, peas, beans, tomatoes, cukes, carrots, watermelon and zucchini.
this year, we’ll do the same and add yams.
we’re still frozen solid and under a couple feet of snow. so, no seeds for us yet.

I’m hoping to expand our garden a bit this year. Last year we had so much rain that things didn’t go as well as I’d hoped. I tend to focus on what grows well in my area of southern New England–kale, broccoli, green and yellow beans, snap peas, chard, and summer squash. Lettuce was awful for me last year, but I’m going to try that again and some carrots and cucumbers. Tomatoes do so-so in my garden, but I try them every year. My entire plot is enclosed by 8 feet of deer fencing because my yard is surrounded by woods and there are lots of deer in my area.

Well I think it will be the end of March before I get things rolling around here in TN for our garden. I only have enough window space for a few plant starters for indoors and I also have a cat who loves to knock these planters over.

But once I do get going, I am going to be growing jalapenos (freeze them to use all year round for recipes!), tomatoes, cilantro, basil, zinas, merigolds, cantalopes, and green beans. We tried planting squash last year (yellow and green) and after they bloomed the plant shriveled and died…also happened with our pumpkins. ??? I would also like to try acorn squash…yum! Cannot wait to get going! It is going to be our science class for my 2nd grader next year (homeschool)!

Funny you posted this today! Just ordered my plants/seeds yesterday! Our garden will consist of:
Potatoes, Carrots, Jalapanos, Tomatoes, Cherry tomatoes, squash, zucchini, peas, onions, raspberries, strawberries, corn, cucumbers, kolrhabi, and I think I’m forgetting some!

I love to do my own canning and food storage. Last year I only made salsa, spaghetti sauce, stewed tomatoes, applesauce, apple butter and apple pie filling. I did freeze corn, strawberries and zucchini.

I’m so excited to start gardening this year. It will be awhile before I can get stuff planted as I am in Colorado, but cannot wait. I’ll be mostly starting from seed this year!

I love gardening and wish I had more time. I plant sooo much so I have it throughout the winter month. Last year we did green beans, cabbage, peas, limas, corn, popcorn, tomatoes (3 kinds), peppers(10 kinds), cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, broc., brussel sprouts, watermellon, cantalopes, strawberries, asparagus, rhubarb, acron squash, pumpkins and more I can’t remember there was so much. I don’t do root veggies since my ground is so full of glass and rock, but this year I will be planting them in containers. A friend of mine has told me about container gardens and using them makes the veggies grow better. She also told me how to make my own root cellar for keeping things like potatoes, onions, squash and other things through the winter. I am really excited to try it this year and hoping we don’t have the rain like last year that caused blight in our tomatoes, my sons were so not happy with store bought spagetti sauce. Happy gardening.
