free tax filing 300x122 Tax Act: Free Federal Filing for Everyone!

Ready to get your taxes done?  How about doing it for free?  Just go HERE and get set up for free federal filing with Tax Act.  You will have to pay for the state filing, which is the case no matter what you do.  In all my years filing my taxes for free, I have never found a way for the state filing to be free.  Don’t ever pay for your federal filing if you don’t have to.

I have to say I used TaxACT this year for the first time (usually I just do the 1040 the oldfashioned way – no help at all). It worked great and I did the e-file, which I’ve NEVER done using it. I just got my refund direct deposited this morning!!!! Funny you should post this today. :)

I’ve used Taxact for the last few years. I wish the state filing was free as well, but I think it’s a good product and worth the $14.95 to do my state and federal.

I’m pretty positive you end up paying for the state e-filing. It’s free if you mail it in yes, but e-file always costs for the state. This is no matter who you go with.

I have never paid to have my taxes filed for me online. Check with any services that you have – they might have a program that lets you file for free. In 2007, I was able to file through State Farm both my state and federal for free with TurboTax online. Last year, I filed my federal taxes for free with Turbo Tax and then filed my state tax for free through the state (https://pa.direct.file.state.pa.us/authentication.asp if you are in Pennsylvania). This year, I am planning on filing both state and federal for free through Vanguard.

Check around and see if any companies you are affiliated with offer deals like these! And check to see if your state has an online free e-file program. You can always use Turbo Tax to figure out your state filing and then go back and do it by hand and then match them up. Doing your taxes shouldn’t cost you extra money!

For those living in Indiana–you can file your state taxes for free on the state webpage. You have to reenter all the date from the free federal tax programs, but the bonus is that my return was direct deposited in 5 days!

In California we can go through our state’s tax agency website and e-file our state taxes for free. You might want to double check your own state tax agency.
