So you’re stuck in a world with famine, poverty, violence, liars and cut-throat corporations and governments. It’s disheartening as well as discouraging. What can you really do that will make any sort of difference in this life?
The way I see you it, you’ve got two choices.
- Let it depress and discourage you so that you just go about your daily life trying to get by.
- You let it embolden you to make a change no matter how small that change is.
This is what separates the heroes from the villains, the winners from the losers and the joyfully triumphant from the defeated. One of my biggest frustrations with this time of year is that most people only think of helping others around the holidays. “Oh it’s Christmas-time, we need to help the needy”.
Making a difference in this world won’t happen this way. It’s about a lifestyle change and a commitment to a better life. It’s a mindset change so that we get out of our own funk, and live a life for the betterment of our world.
When was the last time you…
Held the door open for a stranger?
Offered to pay for someone’s bill they couldn’t pay?
Left a kind note for a neighbor?
Cooked up a special meal for someone who was sick?
Provided for someone that needed clothing?
Gave a heartfelt and thoughtful gift vs. just grabbing whatever you could find on sale?
Left a generous tip for your waiter or waitress?
Apologized to someone, even though you knew you were right?
Let someone cut you off in traffic without flipping them the bird and/or yelling?
Showed someone who made a bad choice complete compassion, love and understanding?
We live in a suspicious society. Last year I tried to give a woman a Groupon voucher for $50 to spend in a store. She turned me down flat and walked away acting like I was trying to get something out of her. People are suspicious and nervous of others because they are used to seeing the type of world that I described above in the first sentence.
But how wonderful would it be if every single person decided that he/she wanted to make a difference, no matter how small? We would see radical change in the way our society operates, we would help others, change lives, and redirect the path of history.
If half the people on our planet took a vow of compassion and love, and dedicated their lives to making a difference, I believe that we could drastically change the way society operates.
Will this ever happen? Probably not. But am I going to let that stop, discourage and depress me? No. If I change the world by helping one person, I’m going to do it.
Will YOU change the world this holiday season, and for all time?
